Electrical Testing of wireless USB
Mandate: Informational
Effective Date: June, 2008

Wireless USB devices seeking certification that expose wired USB ports are required to have the wired ports certified as well. To test the wired ports, the existing compliance procedures found at http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/ are to be followed. However, some of the procedures need to be modified to accomodate the unique features of wireless USB.

Host Wire Adapters (HWA)

  • Follow the Device High Speed Electrical Test Procedures on the upstream port
  • Use the USBHSET tool kit to initiate test modes on the HWA Device Port.
NOTE: USB Voltage / Current adapter may be used to provide continuous voltage on VBus while the HWA is initialized by the USBHSET tool kit.
  • Average Current Draw Test measures current consumed by the HWA while operating in various USB modes: unconfigured, configured, operating and suspend. Operating current requires an the radio of the HWA to be active. Data transmission to three or more devices should be performed to measure operating current. HWAs require vendor supplied software drivers and occasionally a device firmware utility to enter configured, operational and suspend states. To prevent redundant testing between Wired and Wireless Interoperability tests, the operating current measurement should be performed during the Wireless Interoperability test since the HWA manufacture software is required during normal host operation and suspend.

WHCI-based PDK Firmware Update
Mandate: Required
Effective Date: April, 2008
New revisions of the following firmware for the WHCI of the PDK is available at: http://www.usb.org/developers/wusb/wusbtools
  • WHCI PDK versions with a serial number TXP080124-xxx, TXP070420-xxx, use: Firmware Version: 1.2.44.0
  • WHCI PDK versions with a serial number TXP0648-xxx and other previous versions, use: Firmware Version: 1.2.43.0

WHCI PDK with serial numbers TXP07060-xxx, TXP09010-xxx, TXP06440-xxx Antiquated
Mandate: Required
Effective Date: January, 2008

The following wireless PDKs cannot be used as the host for certifying Wireless USB devices:

  • WHCI PDK versions with a serial number TXP07060-xxx, TXP09010-xxx, TXP06440-xxx

These PDKs implement an obsolete controller and the firmware has not been kept up-to-date with the current version of Wireless USBCV. WHCI PDKs with serial numbers outside those specified may be used as the host for certifying Wireless USB devices

Wireless USBCV Installation Errors with Vista
Mandate: Required
Effective Date: July, 2008
Wireless USB Command Verifier (WUSBCV) is the compliance test tool which evaluates Wireless USB devices for conformance to the WUSB Host and Device Framework.

When installing Wireless USBCV on Microsoft Windows Vista an additional step will be required if error condition 1721 appears during the install. The error condition is caused when the User Account Control is enabled.Disabling the UAC to install WUSBCV will permit Wireless USB-CV to complete the installation.

To disable UAC go to: Control panel ->User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control (on / off)

It is recommend to return UAC to 'Enabled' but it is not necessary to run Wireless USB-CV.

Clarification on Certification of Directed Beaconing and Non-beaconing Wireless USB Devices
Mandate: Required
Effective Date: October, 2008
Directed beaconing Wireless USB devices are not eligible for Wireless USB certification. In addition, at the current time, non-beaconing devices will not be certified. Only beaconing Wireless USB devices may obtain Wireless USB Certification.

Name

usba, usb - Solaris USB Architecture (USBA)

Description

USB provides a low-cost means for attaching peripheral devices, including mass-storage devices, keyboards, mice, and printers, to a system. For complete information on the USB architecture, visit the USB website at http://www.usb.org.

USBA supports 126 hot-pluggable USB devices per USB bus. The maximum data transfer rate is 1.5 Mbits (low speed USB 1.x) or 12 Mbits (full speed USB 1.x) or 480 MBits (high speed USB 2.0), or 5Gbits (Super speed USB3.0) per second. (Mbps).

USBA adheres to the Universal Serial Bus 3.0 specification and provides a transport layer abstraction to USB client drivers.

For information on how to write USB client drivers, see Writing Device Drivers for Oracle Solaris 11.2. For the latest information on writing USB drivers, visit http://www.oracle.com. For a complete listof USBA interfaces, see Intro(9F) and Intro(9S).

Devices without a driver may have a libusb(3LIB) application. For more information, see /usr/sfw/share/doc/libusb/libusb.txt.

Listed below are drivers and modules which either utilize or are utilized by USBA. Drivers in /kernel/drv are 32 bit drivers (x86 only). Drivers in /kernel/drv/sparcv9 or /kernel/drv/amd64 are 64 bit drivers.
