Adaptec Series 7 and 8 RAID controllers have significant changes in their underlying hardware architecture compared to Series 5 controllers and older. These changes require updated drivers, so the existing Adaptec AACRAID driver that has been inbox for years, will not load for these newer controllers. An updated Linux driver, version 1.1.7-28900, was submitted to http://www.kernel.org/ for inclusion into the upstream kernel. It was officially included with the release of the 3.4 kernel.Driver

In a continued effort to improve our Linux support with Series 7 and 8, we provide minimally tested drivers. These minimally tested drivers do not undergo the same rigorous qualification testing as our full release drivers, but are updated more frequently allowing greater synchronized support for currently available versions of Linux we support. Please see Answer ID 17202 for details about minimally tested drivers.

Hi all,
I've recently built a machine to be used as a NAS server and bought the Adaptec RAID 71605 Controller to connect additional drives to my machine since my motherboard only has 4 SATA ports. Did I make the wrong choice due to the controller possibly being a RAID controller?
I figured I should be fine if I installed the driver for the corresponding controller, but I've had trouble getting it to install successfully based off some random instructions for installing FreeBSD drivers I found online. I've also looked at the FreeBSD manual and there's an aacraid entry but I can't find the specific driver to match. Does anyone have any experience installing this controller or even know if it is compatible in a FreeNAS setup?
